"[...] November 11, 1918.
All across the Western front, the clocks that were lucky enough to escape the four years of shelling chimed the eleventh hour. And with that the First World War came to an end.
From 10 o’clock to 11 — the hour for the cessation of hostilities — the opposed batteries simply raised hell. Not even the artillery prelude to our advance into the Argonne had anything on it. To attempt an advance was out of the question. It was not a barrage. It was a deluge. [. . .] Nothing quite so electrical in effect as the sudden stop that came at 11 A. M. has ever occurred to me. It was 10:60 precisely and — the roar stopped like a motor car hitting a wall. The resulting quiet was uncanny in comparison. From somewhere far below ground, Germans began to appear. They clambered to the parapets and began to shout wildly. They threw their rifles, hats, bandoleers, bayonets and trench knives toward us. They began to sing. —Lieutenant Walter A. Davenport, 101st Infantry Regiment, US Army
And just like that, it was over. Four years of the bloodiest carnage the world had ever seen came to a stop as sudden and bewildering as its start. And the world vowed “Never again.”
Each year, we lay the wreath. We hear “The Last Post.” We mouth the words “never again” like an incantation. But what does it mean? To answer this question, we have to understand what WWI was.
WWI was an explosion, a breaking point in history. In the smoldering shell hole of that great cataclysm lay the industrial-era optimism of never-ending progress. Old verities about the glory of war lay strewn around the battlefields of that “Great War” like a fallen soldier left to die in No Man’s Land, and along with it lay all the broken dreams of a world order that had been blown apart. Whether we know it or not, we here in the 21st century are still living in the crater of that explosion, the victims of a First World War that we are only now beginning to understand.
What was World War One about? How did it start? Who won? And what did they win? Now, 100 years after those final shots rang out, these questions still puzzle historians and laymen alike. But as we shall see, this confusion is not a happenstance of history but the wool that has been pulled over our eyes to stop us from seeing what WWI really was. [...]"

½
Plot: A missing link brought back from Africa terrorizes a pair of newlyweds.
Review: While historically significant as the first horror film to feature an all black cast, Son of Ingagi is, otherwise, a terrible, barely coherent slog.
Year: 1940 Genre: Creature Feature, Sci-Fi Horror Country: United States Language: English Runtime: 1 hour 10 minutes
Director: Richard C. Kahn Writer: Spencer Williams Cinematographers: Roland Price, Spencer Williams, Herman Schopp, Laura Bowman Editor: Dan Milner Cast: Alfred Grant, Daisy Bufford, Zack Williams, Laura Bowman, Spencer Williams
------
Story: 0.5/5 - A mess of sci-fi and mystery cliches worsened by plot holes and uncompelling characters.
Performances: 2/5 - Range from generic to downright stiff and unnatural.
Cinematography: 2.5/5 - While fairly cheap, there are a few imaginative shots used to imply violence.
Editing: 1.5/5
Sets: 2/5 - Obvious sets, but with some attempted diversity.
Costumes, Hair, & Make-Up: 2.5/5 - N'Gina's make-up is extremely underwhelming. The rest of the costumes and make-up are fine.

- Caroll Quigley "Histoire secrète de l'Oligarchie anglo-américaine" page 263.

Various photographs of the Parade Enfilade of Quarenghi - Alexander Palace, Tsarskoe Selo Today, I wanted to talk more about Quarenghi's Parade Enfilade, which has been discussed at length in several posts now. Recently I made two posts on the decoration of plants and flowers in the Alexander Palace, of which these figured prominently in the State Apartments. The trouble is, there are not many photographs which show the greenery which decorated Quarenghi's Parade Enfilade. From research, I've found some discussion on the plant decorations of the Parade Enfilade, namely that they were only for display during exhibits, gala dinners and luncheons. However, from the photographs that can be found, it is obvious that Their Majesties kept live plants in these three rooms. They varied through-out the reign of Tsar Nicholas II, and as mentioned in a previous post detailing, in depth about the greenery and floral decorations of the Alexander Palace, via the book "Tsarskoe Selo: Familiar and unfamiliar." Written by former, senior archivist Galina Semenova: "In 1913, the last delivery took place, which was stopped due to the First World War. The plants from the state halls were removed in the spring of 1917, from the private apartments –shortly after the removal of the royal family to Tobolsk. The museum exposition opened in the palace without plants. In preparation for the opening of the museum in 1918, all the jardinieres were removed from the front halls, partially left for display in private rooms." Below, I've compiled four photographs which show some of the plant decorations which flourished in Quarenghi's Parade Enfilade. Along with these photographs is some information pertaining to each photograph. Please enjoy! ________________________________________________________________
In one photograph, which comes to us from the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, via one of the six albums rescued by Anna Vyrubova, one of the Empress's ladies-in-waiting, a view can be seen from the Portrait Hall through to the Marble Drawing-Room. Some of the furniture pieces have dust covers on them for protection, and there are some plant decorations still in place (namely a palm tree which was one of four, kept in galvanized steel basins, and a fretwork of ivy or another type of greenery which was usually kept at the left corner of the columned arcade leading into the Portrait Hall. This fretwork of greenery can also be seen in the photograph of the Parade Enfilade, Circa. 1909 (which has been posted in two previous posts)), which suggests the Imperial Family was either leaving on holiday or visiting another country, or just returning home. However, there are also some other photographs which were made, one in early February of 1917, and the other two during an exhibition in the early part April, 1910. The photograph from 1917 is of interest as it shows a view of the Semi-Circular Hall, mainly taken for a group portrait of the Tsar with delegates, officials and Mission members of the Allied Mission to Russia which was headed by Alfred Milner, 1st Viscount Milner. During Milner's visit, a state dinner was given on 4 February, 1917. As there is no indication of a visit by Lord Milner to Russia prior to 1917, the photograph could only have been taken in early 1917 at the state dinner mentioned. Lord Milner can be seen, sitting to the left of His Majesty in the group portrait. In the back-ground, to the left can be seen two, low-lying palm trees. As mentioned above, in Mme. Semenova's book, the order for plants and flowers had been halted because of the War. To the immediate right can be seen a sculpture of Tsar Peter I, in-front of a wood and glass folding-screen, and at its base a jardinière for other plant decoration. This photograph was taken by the Court Photographer, Hahn (C.E. de Hahn & Co). The aforementioned photographs made in April of 1910, were taken during the Exhibition of the Imperial Archaeological Commission. This exhibition was opened in 1910, and shows two, L-shaped tables laid out, along with display easels, etc. for exhibiting the finds of the Commission. One notices immediately the tall palm tree groupings which can also be seen in the photograph taken of the Parade Enfilade (1909), also by the Court Photographer, Hahn. ________________________________________________________________ Photographs: 1. Although the concept of a 'scientific dictatorship' was outwardly expressed through the socialist totalitarian systems of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, the concept had not yet reached the global scope of Huxley's Brave New World. Yet, there was another embryonic scientific dictatorship waiting to be birthed. On October 24, 1945, shortly after the fall of the Nazi scientific dictatorship, another one called the United Nations was created.
The United Nations finds its proximate origins with the architects of Pax Britannia, an Anglophile variant of the scientific dictatorship concept. Recall Cecil Rhodes' 'Confession of Faith,' which articulated his vision for a British world government. This vision was inspired by John Ruskin, a professor at Oxford University. However, Cecil Rhodes not the only adherent of Ruskin's imperialistic message. Evidently, others had taken to heart the Anglophilic gospel of Ruskin and, eventually, became associated with Rhodes. Together, this network would establish a secret society devoted to the cause of British expansionism.
Carroll Quigley elaborates: Among Ruskin's devoted disciples at Oxford were a group of intimate friends including Arnold Toynbee, Alfred (later Lord) Milner, Arthur Glazebrook, George (later Sir George), Philip Lyttelton Gell, Henry (later Sir Henry) Birchenough. These were so moved by Ruskin that they devoted the rest of their lives to carrying out his ideas. A similar group of Cambridge men including Reginald Baliol Brett (Lord Esher), Sir John B. Seeley, Albert (Lord) Grey, and Edmund Garrett were also aroused by Ruskin's message and devoted their lives to the extension of the British Empire and uplift of England's urban masses as two parts of one project which they called 'extension of the English-speaking idea.' They were remarkably successful in these aims because of England's most sensational journalist William Stead (1849 - 1912), an ardent social reformer and imperialist, brought them into association with Rhodes. This association was formally established on February 5, 1891, when Rhodes and Stead organized a secret society of which Rhodes had been dreaming for sixteen years. In this secret society Rhodes was to be leader; Stead, Brett (Lord Esher), and Milner were to form an executive committee; Arthur (Lord) Balfour, (Sir) Harry Johnston, Lord Rothschild, Albert (Lord) Grey, and others were listed as potential members of a 'Circle of Initiates'
When Rhodes died, the continuation of his imperialistic vision fell upon the shoulders of the chief Rhodes Trustee Alfred Milner. Under Milner's coordination, the Rhodes network would establish a stateside surrogate organization that would be instrumental in the formation of the United Nations
The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) was the chief organizational conduit for the importation of the Anglophile scientific dictatorship into the United States. With the machinations of Rhodes' Pax Britannia successfully relocated, the Rhodes tradition would continue in the United States. The CFR would create the United Nations to act as a vehicle for realizing Rhodes' vision globally...

Jeanette MacDonald and Maurice Chevalier in The Love Parade (Ernst Lubitsch, 1929) Cast: Maurice Chevalier, Jeanette MacDonald, Lupino Lane, Lillian Roth, Eugene Pallette, E.H. Calvert, Edgar Norton, Lionel Belmore. Screenplay: Ernest Vajda, Guy Bolton, based on a play by Leon Xanrof and Jules Chancel. Cinematography: Victor Milner. Art direction: Hans Dreier. Film editing: Merrill G. White. Costume design: Travis Banton. Music: Victor Schertzinger. It irritates me a little to think that MGM, thanks largely to those That's Entertainment clip shows in the 1970s, is celebrated for its movie musicals, when in fact the genre was pioneered and perfected at other studios: Warner Bros. with its Busby Berkeley dance spectacles, RKO with its Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers cycle, and Paramount, where Ernst Lubitsch virtually invented the story musical with The Love Parade and subsequent re-teamings of Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald. (Oddly, today MacDonald is better known for her inferior and unsexy MGM teaming with Nelson Eddy.) MGM didn't achieve musical greatness until the end of the 1930s, when after the success of The Wizard of Oz (Victor Fleming, 1939), the studio put its associate producer, Arthur Freed, in charge of the film musicals unit. True, MGM had won a best-picture Oscar with The Broadway Melody (Harry Beaumont, 1929), but that was a standard backstage musical, not one in which the songs and dances are fully integrated into the plot. Besides, it's almost unwatchable today, whereas thanks to the charm of Chevalier and the sexiness of MacDonald in her revealing pre-Code frippery, but most of all to what is known as "the Lubitsch touch," The Love Parade is still enjoyable. Lubitsch's "touch" as a director was based on a sly conviction that the audience would get the joke, usually a naughty one, and it was perfected during the silent era, when things had to be shown, not told. So the film opens with a mostly silent demonstration of why Count Alfred Renard (Chevalier) has caused such a scandal with his dalliances in Paris that he has to be recalled to Sylvania and rebuked by Queen Louise (MacDonald). But this is also a film that wittily integrates sound into its sight gags, as the entire Sylvanian court eavesdrops on the burgeoning love of Alfred and Louise. The plot, derived by screenwriters Guy Bolton and Ernest Vajda from a French play, is standard, slightly sexist stuff about the prince consort, Alfred, feeling miffed by the fact that his marriage to the queen leaves him with nothing to do, but it's carried off well by the leads, as well as the saucy servants, Jacques (Lupino Lane) and Lulu (Lillian Roth), and a court full of skilled character actors like Eugene Pallette, Edgar Norton, and Lionel Belmore. It's too bad that the song score by lyricist Clifford Grey and composer Victor Schertzinger isn't better -- there are too many reprises of "Dream Lover," for example -- but Lubitsch's staging compensates for its weakness.
